The investigation, led by the Eastern District of New York’s Attorney’s Office, centered around content from a network called GirlsDoPorn (GDP), which was indicted for sex trafficking in 2019. Despite numerous complaints from women stating that videos were posted without their consent, Aylo continued to host GDP’s content on Pornhub and other sites until GDP’s conviction. The settlement signifies an attempt to rectify past negligence and ensure lawful behavior moving forward.

In response to increasing scrutiny, Pornhub has implemented several measures to improve safety and compliance, including banning video downloads, requiring user verification for video postings, and commissioning an independent review of its compliance policies. The company’s transformation continues as it was recently acquired by Ethical Capital Partners.

The broader context includes recent regulatory changes such as the EU’s Digital Services Act, which imposes stringent regulations on adult content platforms, and similar age verification requirements in the United States. These regulations aim to enhance online safety but have raised concerns about privacy and the secure handling of personal identification. The ongoing challenge is balancing internet regulation and user safety with the protection of online anonymity and security.
